UFC 289 Main Event Preview
TAMPA – Another UFC Pay-Per-View is here, and it’s UFC 289. It promises two of the best fights that fight fans have been waiting for.
In the Co-Main Event, Charles “Do Bronx” Oliveira takes on Beneil Dariush. That’s sure to be a spectacle, as they will be fighting for a chance to fight the reigning UFC Lightweight Champion, Islam Makhachev.
This fight is a major one for Oliveira, as the last time that Oliveira was the champion, he was forced to vacate the lightweight title due to missing weight by half a pound. With a win on Saturday, Charles Oliveira will get an opportunity to fight for UFC gold yet again.
Speaking of UFC gold, in the Main Event of UFC 289, Amanda “the Lioness” Nunes will face Irene Aldana for the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Championship. Nunes has held the bantamweight championship since July 30, 2022, and holds the UFC Featherweight Championship, making her the only female fighter to hold two belts simultaneously.
Nunes was set to face Julianna Pena for the bantamweight title; however, due to Pena breaking her ribs, Irene Aldana will come in to replace her for the Main Event. Before breaking her ribs, Pena was the only female fighter to beat Nunes, submitting her and giving Nunes her first loss in 14 fights. As Irene Aldana steps in, she has won four out of her last five fights and looks to claim the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Championship in another victory.
As Julianna Pena watches to see who the bantamweight champion will be, she will be next in line for a title fight. If Nunes retains, a trilogy fight could be what’s next for Pena.
Will Oliveira become the number one contender? Will Amanda Nunes retain her title and still be a dual-weight champion? Find out this Saturday, June 10, on ESPN+ PPV. The main card starts at 10:00 pm EST.
