Charles Schwab Challenge PGA Preview

Colonial Country Club, Fort Worth, Texas

The tour rolls on after a grueling week at Oak Hill for the PGA Championship. Congratulations to Brooks Koepka winning his third Wanamaker Trophy. Also, congratulations is in order for Michael Block for not only taking over the tournament with his outstanding play as top PGA professional but for winning over the gallery and America. Finally, congratulations to our DDSN Golf Dept. finishing the weekend +3.5 units.

Next stop on the PGA schedule is back in the Lone Star State for the Charles Schwab Challenge at the home of Hogan’s Alley, Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. Ben Hogan, proud Texan, won the first two Colonial Invitationals in 1946 and 1947 and went on to win the tournament an additional 3 more times. No other golfer has won more than twice. Going into the week a late withdrawal has opened the door for Michael Block to continue his magical ride receiving a sponsor exemption to play in this weeks tournament.

The Field:

This week’s field will consist of 120 players all vying to wear the red plaid jacket on Sunday afternoon. The newly regained world number 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler will be looking to better his second place finish last year with a win this weekend. Sam Burns will also be looking to defend his title and right the ship for the second half of the season. Other past Colonial champions in the field this week include Jordan Spieth, Justin Rose, Kevin Kisner, Zach Johnson, Chris Kirk and Rory Sabbatini. Other notable names in the field this week include Collin Morikawa, Max Homa, Kurt Kitayama, Tony Finau, Victor Hovland, Tom Kim and Sungjae Im.

The Course:

Colonial Country Club does not have the frills and thrills of Oak Hill last week but there will still be a challenge this week for the field. A par 70, 7209yd with old school golf feel. Opened in 1936 on the southwest side of Fort Worth nestled along the banks of the Trinity River, Colonial has been a fixture in Texas golf history. Hosting the 1941 U.S. Open, won by Craig Wood going 4 over for the week. The bent grass greens will be some of the fastest greens on tour measuring early at 12-13 on stimp meter. The weather may bring some rain on Thursday morning with the rest of the weekend clearing up and at times getting a bit gusty between 15-20mph. Looking forward for Colonial to hold its own against the best golfers in the world this week.
