After a weekend full of debauchery at the Waste Management Open, we had quite the ending. It looked like longtime Waste Management-sponsored golfer, Charley Hoffman, was going to win this tournament. However, Canadian Nick Taylor came storming back to force a playoff, eventually winning the Phoenix Open. This marked his fifth PGA Tour victory.
This weekend, the ‘Big Cat’ Tiger Woods will be making his much-anticipated return to the PGA Tour, sporting his new ‘Sun Day Red’ attire as the tournament host. The Genesis Invitational is the seventh event of the 2024 season and the third Signature event. There will be 70 players in the field, with a 36-hole cut for the low 50 players and ties. Any additional players within 10 strokes of the lead will also advance to the weekend. The total purse at stake this weekend is $20 million, with the winner taking home $4 million and 700 FedEx points.
After a winning tournament at Pebble Beach, we took a step back at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Let’s try to turn this ship around this weekend.
The Field:
The Phoenix Open runner-up, Charley Hoffman, played himself into the field this week. He is also part of the Aon Swing 5, which includes Grayson Murray, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Kevin Yu, and Justin Thomas. With Jon Rahm and Joaquin Niemann no longer on the PGA Tour, Max Homa is the returning champion from 2021. It’s a loaded field with everyone gunning for that $4 million purse.
The Course:
The beautiful Riviera Country Club is playing host this weekend, and all we can do is hope for some nice weather after the past couple of weekends. We are back in California, with poa annua greens once again. It looks like it will be partly cloudy on Thursday and Friday, with a good chance of showers on Saturday and Sunday.
