The Ultimate Fighter: Clean Sweep?

TAMPA – Conor McGregor’s name has been synonymous with greatness, with a formidable skill of defeating his opponents in the octagon, sometimes even before they step foot in the cage.

As of late, McGregor’s recent streak of coaching on this season of The Ultimate Fighter has been nothing short of disgraceful and embarrassing. In Episode 5, Team McGregor suffers another loss at the hands of another Team Chandler veteran.

In the latest episode of The Ultimate Fighter, Team McGregor’s Carlos Vera takes on Team Chandler’s Brad Katona.

Carlos Vera is 34 years old, from Ecuador, with a pro MMA record of 12-4. He has won his last three fights, two of which he finished by way of guillotine choke.

Brad Katona is 32 years old from the United States, with a pro MMA record of 12-2. He has lost two out of his last three fights.

This fight looked to be in favor of Carlos Vera before it even started. Vera started clean, landing leg kick after leg kick and defending a takedown. However, as the fight went on, Katona showed why he was undefeated in Season 27, putting on a clinic and showcasing his wrestling abilities, keeping Vera fighting on the ground. Near the end of the first round, Vera was able to escape the ground and land a nice right-hand jab.

The second round began with more leg kicks from Vera, followed by a takedown from Katona, where he controlled the round, maintaining ground control and attempting to cinch in a guillotine choke of his own.

Vera escaped and was able to get into half guard and then into top mount position. Katona escaped, landing a key takedown, where he controlled the pace of the fight by maintaining the top mount position. Round two ended as Vera escaped the ground again, putting Katona into a guillotine choke as the horn sounded.

McGregor entered the octagon before the judge’s decision to complain that there should be a third round. “Give them three rounds, lads. We want three-rounders here, judges, yeah? It’s five rounds for a world title. You ever had one of those world titles, Michael?” he asked Michael Chandler.

The judges awarded the fight to Team Chandler’s Brad Katona by unanimous decision. With the fight awarded to Team Chandler, the video cut to Dana White’s thoughts, where he said, “I could see this fight going into a third round, but unfortunately, the judges saw it differently, and the fight ended after two.”

As a coach, Conor McGregor is responsible for shaping his team to be skilled warriors. However, the recent losing streak raises questions about his coaching abilities. It is also worth considering the impact of Conor’s absence from not only active competition but also the weigh-ins for his team. His hiatus from the octagon and his team looks to cost them dearly.

On the next episode of The Ultimate Fighter, Team McGregor’s number-one seed, Lee Hammond, will take on Team Chandler’s number-four ranked Kurt Holobaugh.

Lee Hammond is a 27-year-old Irishman who has been training with Conor and is currently 5-0. Three of his last five fights were won by TKO, and his last fight was won by submission by use of an armbar.

Kurt Holobaugh is a 36-year-old fighting in the United States and is currently 19-7. Two of his last three fights were won by way of KO, with both ending early by no more than 30 seconds into a round.

Will Lee Hammond give Team McGregor a win or will Kurt Holobaugh stack up another win for Team Chandler? Find out on the next episode of The Ultimate Fighter.
