The Open Preview: Round 4

Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Hoylake, England

The Scottish Open was a literal whirlwind of a weekend. Thursday and early Friday had pleasant weather for the field, but then the blustery Scottish winds showed up for the weekend. There was a surge of European players to the top of the leaderboard, and the cream of the crop did rise to the top. At the end of it all, Rory McIlroy outlasted a late surge by Robert MacIntyre in the final round to win the Scottish Open by one stroke. We played the Scottish Open very conservatively with only our pre-tournament wagers and 1st round wagers. It worked out for us as planned as we finished +7.55 units for the weekend.

The final major of the year is upon us. It feels like this golf season has been a blur. The Royal Liverpool Golf Club, founded in 1869, will host The Open Championship for the 12th time. Rory McIlroy was the last champion in 2014 at Royal Liverpool, Tiger Woods won in 2006, and Bobby Jones in 1930. This will be the 151st Open Championship. The history of the tournament is deep, and the stories are long. Even when watching the tournament, the courses, patrons, and aesthetics are a little different, and as a golf enthusiast, I can’t get enough.

The Field:

The field this week is a full 156 players, with the best golfers in the world looking to compete for the Claret Jug. The top 10 OWGR golfers and 49 out of the top 50 OWGR will be playing this week. There are 12 spots in the field that were filled through the Open Qualifying Series, with golfers such as Ben Griffin, Michael Kim, Adam Schenk, and Byeong An, who have been playing well all season. The LIV golfers will also be present in the field, with favorites like Brooks Koepka, Phil Mickelson, Cam Smith, and Dustin Johnson. This week, it feels like Rory will be the favorite, with him winning last week and being the last champion at Royal Liverpool Golf Club.

The Course:

Nestled along the northeast coast of England, just east of the city of Liverpool, lies the Royal Liverpool Golf Club. The course is chiseled out of the former land of a racecourse for the Liverpool Hunt Club. The Royal Liverpool grounds are where the rules of amateur golf status were established. It plays as a true links course, and when the course dries out, it plays fast from tee to green. In 2006, Tiger Woods famously pulled a driver only once during his four rounds on the road to victory. The course plays very level, which allows the wind to shear throughout the course without relent. Some early reports from the course have noted very soft conditions, allowing for some low scoring this weekend. The rain will be a factor from Friday through Sunday, which will make it interesting to see how the players can take advantage of the softer course.
