Augusta National Golf Course, Augusta, Georgia

We have made our way back to 2604 Washington Rd in Augusta, Georgia for the 2024 Masters. There are storylines galore heading into this season, starting with defending champion Jon Rahm, who left the PGA Tour for LIV Golf and is now receiving plenty of criticism over it. It’s not only Rahm, but the rest of the LIV golfers in the field will be dealing with the same scrutiny as they prepare for golf’s first major of the season. Last year, there were three LIV golfers in the Top 5: Brooks Koepka, Phil Mickelson, and Patrick Reed. Will we see LIV make another strong run this year? Joaquin Niemann has been a hot name coming into this weekend, with maybe a little bit of destiny on his side. He did not meet any of the 20 exemption categories, but Augusta National offered him a special invitation. This is only the beginning of the numerous stories to look forward to this weekend.

Now, for the odds-on favorite, Scottie Scheffler, who may not even finish the tournament after vowing to leave if his wife goes into labor at any point this weekend. Scottie has been battling some putting woes, although he has been great all year with his worst finish being T17 at The American Express. It is no surprise Scheffler is the favorite at +400, as his lowest finish at Augusta was T19 in his 2020 debut. Once again, it is Scottie vs. the field.

Speaking of storylines, how about Rory McIlroy and his quest for a green jacket victory to complete his career Grand Slam? Rory’s first top 5 of the season came last weekend in San Antonio when he finished 3rd. Will he be able to get the job done this year, or will he give up on that dream entirely if he doesn’t win and make a move to LIV Golf? As rumors and drama swirl around Rory this weekend, the pressure might be too much for him once again.

There have been a few debutants creating quite the buzz this weekend, but one has not won the Masters since Fuzzy Zoeller did it in 1979, and it has only happened two other times before that (1934 & 1935). Ludvig Aberg has been great so far this season and looks to make a strong debut at Augusta National. How about Wyndham Clark? He has a victory at Pebble Beach (54 holes) and two second-place finishes at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The PLAYERS Championship (T2). There are also some rookie PGA Tour winners that are in the field, including Matthieu Pavon, Nick Dunlap, and Jake Knapp.

According to our Research Department, the only significant weather for this weekend is a chance of thunderstorms on Thursday that could cause some delays in the action. This may also give us 30+ mph winds leading into Friday, which should be fun for the players. Otherwise, we should have sunny days for the rest of the weekend.

Finally, we are less than 24 hours away from officially getting down to business rather than just talking about it. Whether you are a golf enthusiast, gambler, or patron on the hallowed grounds, we all look forward to this weekend at Augusta National. The greens are gearing up to challenge the world’s best on its grandest stage. With surfaces slicker than wet concrete and contours that could rival a rollercoaster, players will need more than just skill—they’ll need nerves of steel.

Only those with a strategic approach, like a chess master, will conquer these lawns. Precision, patience, and a touch of lunacy will be the trifecta for success. So, grab your pimento cheese sandwiches and Azalea cocktails, folks—it’s going to be a wild ride at Augusta.
