Genesis Scottish Open Preview
The Renaissance Club, North Berwick, Scotland
The numbers have been calculated, and although it was a rough Sunday last week for the John Deere Classic, we somehow stayed in the positive. +.9833 units to be exact for the tournament, making it the 10th week in a row in the green for PGA picks. Sepp Straka was on 59 alert much of the back nine on Sunday but double-bogeyed 18 to shoot 62, opening the door for many golfers to make a run to his 21-under number posted. No one stepped up to the plate, and Sepp Straka took home the bag. We were left with the coin purse, but the positive is green. On to the next to keep the streak alive! Make sure to get your bets and lineups in early this week, as tee time will be as early as midnight Thursday!
The top golfers in the world have made the trip across the pond this week for the Genesis Scottish Open, a tuneup event for next week’s The Open Championship. The DP Tour will play host to the top PGA Tour golfers this week. The prize will be the Scottish national championship, with the added enhancement of Scotland being the birthplace of golf. Xander Schauffele is the defending champion and will look to repeat to return to the winner’s circle for the first time of the 2023 season. The 2023 season is coming to a close, with The Open Championship being the only remaining major. The PGA Tour golfers will work to leverage their placement in the FedEx points standings the next few weeks, as the number of playoff qualifiers has been cut to the top 70 FedEx points leaders. Who will be making their final strong push to end the regular season?
The Field:
The field will be on the level of an elevated event this week, as the top players are looking for a tuneup and clock reset this week heading into the final major next week. The field will consist of eight of the top 10 OWGR players and seven of the top 10 FedEx points earners. The big names will be in action, including Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler coming off his victory at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. The field will consist of 156 players: 75 DP World Tour players, 75 PGA Tour players, three KPGA players and three sponsor exemptions.
The Course:
The Renaissance Club was established in 2008 along the North Sea coastline. Its property neighbors golf courses on either side, one being Muirfield, established in 1744. Tom Doak, an American course architect, designed the original layout, which has been since been updated to include three coastal holes. The Renaissance Club is a true links-style course, which usually requires players to adjust their playing styles compared to the grip-and-rip style we are accustomed to in the United States. The course sets up as a par 70 at 7,237 yards. Wind and weather will be a factor this week, with breezy conditions throughout and rain in the forecast Friday through Sunday.
