Rocket Mortgage Classic: Round 2

Phot Credit: USA Today

Detroit Golf Club, Detroit Rock City, Michigan

The Travelers Championship ended with Keegan Bradley running away with it and setting records along the way. It was a win for the New Englander in New England, which was his first win since last year’s Zozo Championship. We ended up +3.16 units for the weekend, making it 8 straight weeks in a row in the positive. The lines continue to be tight, but this past week we took a different approach, and it paid off. This week, the PGA tour rides to the Motor City of Detroit for the Rocket Mortgage Classic. The week started badly for the tournament with a bad storm rolling through on Sunday, causing trees to collapse, but the ground crews have no doubt the course will be ready for play Thursday. There will also be an issue with air quality from the Canadian wildfires drifting over the border, but nonetheless, the golf will go on. The defending champion, Tony Finau, will be in the field, coming off a record 262 (-26) finish in the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic. The purse will be $8.8 million, with $1.584 million going to the winner.

The Field:

This week will not be an elevated event, but will still have some star power. Defending champion Tony Finau joins Max Homa and Tom Kim as the top 10 FedEx point leaders in the field. Other big names in the field this week include Justin Thomas and Rickie Fowler, coming off hot performances; Austin Eckroat, who will be looking to keep his hot run going; and Collin Morikawa, who will be making his Rocket Mortgage debut. He has won four times in his debut performances at events. The remaining field of 156 players in total is filled with a mix of young, hungry players and old, savvy players, all looking to cash in this week. For your DraftKings lineups, the play is to look for distance off the tee and good putting mix to beef up your lineups.

The Course:

The Detroit Golf Club, founded in 1899, has hosted the Rocket Mortgage Classic since 2019. The course will be playing as a par 72 (36-36) and 7,370 yards, an average distance for PGA tour events. The course is laid with tee-to-green bent grass/Poa annua with bluegrass roughs. The bent grass greens will be running fast due to a dry spring this year, so putting will be a key stat for success this week. The weather this week will be hazy on Thursday from the wildfire smoke and have an increased possibility of rain over the weekend.
