Waste Management Phoenix Open Preview
Record: Outright Wagers (-11.00 Units) & All Other Tournament Wagers (-10.92 Units)
TPC Scottsdale, Phoenix, Arizona
The ultimate golf event of the year is upon us once again. Fortunately, we anticipate no weather issues in Scottsdale this weekend. Golf enthusiasts felt somewhat disappointed last Sunday when harsh weather conditions at Pebble Beach led the PGA Tour to suspend play and conclude the tournament after 54 holes. Wyndham Clark emerged victorious, making history in the third round by scoring a course-record 60. I believe we all yearned for an intense final round at Pebble Beach, with challenging wind conditions, especially after most players dominated Round 3. Tough luck.
Last season, the Phoenix Open was a designated event, but it is not a signature event this year. The total purse in Scottsdale is $8.8 million, with the first place taking home $1,584,000. Scottie Scheffler has won back-to-back at TPC Scottsdale and is now looking for a third win in a row, which has not been done since Steve Stricker in 2011.
As for DDSN, we made it back to the winner’s circle by picking up 2.25 units on our tournament wagers. It’s a small victory, but with an entire round skipped, there’s no telling how it could have really finished. It’s a new week and another opportunity to continue to rack up some wins. We have had one terrible tournament (Farmers), with all the others being in the green. With plenty of the season left to go, there is no reason to panic. We move!
The Field:
Five of the top ten players in the Official World Golf Rankings will be in the field, along with 34 of the top 50 from last year’s FedEx Cup standings. There were a couple of withdrawals from some big names like Xander Schauffele and Viktor Hovland. There were also withdrawals from Davis Riley, Patrick Rodgers, and Kevin Streelman.
A few other will be making the field like PGA Tour rookie, Jake Knapp, finished tied for third at the Farmers Insurance Open and enters at number six in the AON Swing 5 standings. Two players, Eric Cole and Tom Hoge, will be making their sixth start in a row. Arizona State graduate, Kevin Yu, who has already posted two top ten finishes, will be making his WM Management debut. The youngest player in the field will be Tom Kim (21), and the oldest will be Stewart Cink (50). Also, all thirteen players who finished in the top ten or better in the 2023 Phoenix Open went on to finish in the top fifty in the FedEx standings.
The Course:
The Director of Golf Course Operations, Brandon Reese, is from Lubbock, Texas, and is a graduate of Texas Tech University. Reese has hosted a PGA Tournament every year since 2008. The average green sizes at TPC Scottsdale are double those of what was played last week at Pebble Beach. This will also be the fourth straight tournament played on poa annua greens. We get our first taste of desert golf this season and we cannot wait.
