NBA Summer League 7/9/24
Summer League Record: (-2.10 units)
6:00PM CST: Memphis Grizzlies -2 vs. Philadelphia 76ers; Total 187
This is a great matchup to tip off the day. The Grizzlies looked great last night, except their free throw shooting was atrocious, making about 58% from the line. The Sixers, on the other hand, had a great night led by Ricky Council IV’s 29 points. We can assume the usual NBA players will still play tonight for Memphis, like Jake LaRavia and GG Jackson. Scottie Pippen Jr. and Zach Edey also had great nights. The Grizzlies are taking these games seriously and have a deep roster. Cam Spencer was impressive last night, making his 3PT shot look easy. Philly’s Adem Bona will match up with Edey tonight, which should be entertaining and a big test for Bona. I will say I’m a bit concerned because the Sixers struggled offensively if you take away Ricky Council IV’s performance. Jared McCain went cold and missed too many inside shots. He was also 0-6 from 3PT range. I am backing the Grizzlies due to the multiple ways they can score the basketball.

7:00PM CST: San Antonio Spurs -29.5 vs. China; Total 157.5
One thing that stood out to me about the Spurs is their lack of effort. They have been blown out twice and have looked awful. Not many players can create their own shot, and some have the ugliest three-point shots I have seen. Harrison Ingram refuses to pull the trigger. This is not a good roster. Team China, on the other hand, impressed me in their last game. They have some size, run an actual offense, and at least show some effort. This China team has talent and size, and I think they can keep this game close. If the Spurs come out and dominate, oh well. Based on what I have seen in the first two games, I just don’t see it happening. I think this China team will play with confidence after their last game. An 18/1 flyer on China is not a bad idea either.

8:00PM CST: Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Utah Jazz -4.5; Total 186.5
I think we should assume that Utah will not have Keyonte George or Walker Kessler tonight. They still have plenty of talent on the team. They did have trouble scoring without George on the floor though. Oklahoma City didn’t have a great night. They were carried by three point ace Adam Flagler. I am taking the home team with the better talent.

9:00PM CST: Charlotte Hornets -5.5 vs. Sacramento Kings 1; Total 176.5
This Kings team was impressive but they had as close to an NBA roster as you can get at Summer League. I am not sure if those same players will be playing tonight after a day of rest. It is possible after seeing the Spurs have their day 1 players starting. Hornets are off to a hot Summer League start. The way Doug Christie has him team playing tough defense and hustling all over the floor, I have to back the Kings. Normally, we just play the ML with dogs but after last night’s Elam Ending we will double.
