The Mexico Open Preview: Vamos a Vallarta
Mexico Open Preview:
This week the PGA heads south of the border to Vidanta Vallarta for the 2023 Mexico Open. The tournament comes off the recent news of the merging of PGA Latinoamérica and PGA Canada to form PGA Tour Americas. The announcement has come with mixed reviews due to tightening of opportunities for players to advance to the Korn Ferry Tour. Nevertheless, the show moves on for the top level golfers to the beautiful Vidanta resort in Nuevo Vallarta, Nayarit, Mexico.
The Field:
This week’s field is not one of the strongest on the PGA tour schedule. Reigning champion and world number 1 golfer Jon Rahm will be defending his championship along with the runner up from last year Tony Finau. The remaining field consists of plenty of hungry golfers looking to knock off the champion. Included in the field will be 6 Mexican golfers competing this week. The 2021 Mexico Open champion Alvaro Ortiz will be the favorite of the Mexican group to make a run. Some other notables in the field include Alex Noren, Gary Woodland, Matt Wallace, Ben An and Patrick Rodgers.
The Course:
Vidanta Vallarta is a Greg Norman design championship golf course with many natural hazards including 55 bunkers and 6 lakes guarding the scoring opportunities. Along with the defensive elements the course boasts not one but two 600+ yard par 5s. Hole number 6 and hole number 12 will be playing long this week at 607 and 617 yards respectively. The course plays at par 73 with 4 Par 5s on the back 9 which is rare and will allow the golfers more scoring opportunities.
