The Memorial Tournament Preview
Muirfield Village Golf Club, Dublin, Ohio
Last week, Colonial Country Club put the field through another tough test. The past two weeks, the courses have been putting a hurting on the field’s scoring average. For only the third time this season, the winner was held to a single digit under par. There are plenty of tough tests headed into this week. The tour moves on to Jack’s Place, Muirfield Village Golf Club for the Memorial Tournament. The Memorial Tournament is the next elevated event on the PGA season with a tournament purse of $20 million and $3.5 million going to the winner on Sunday. Our DDSN Golf division is looking for another winning tournament after finishing +4.98 units last weekend.
The Field:
Since this is an elevated event, the field will be stacked, including 7 out of 10 and 38 out of 50 of the top golfers in the world. Defending champion Billy Horschel will look to be the second player to win the Memorial Tournament in consecutive years, the other being Tiger Woods. Patrick Cantlay has won two of the past four (2021 and 2019) Memorial Tournaments and finished in third place last year. The two top players in the world Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm will both be looking to get back on the top of the leaderboard this week. Two-time runner up this season Adam Schenk will be looking to take the next step and win this week. Some names who have been performing well as of late will also be in the field: Austin Eckroat, Brandon Wu, Aaron Rai, and Beau Hossler.
The Course:
Muirfield Village Golf Club is Jack Nicklaus’ crown jewel. Opened in 1974, Jack Nicklaus designed the championship par 72 course. Muirfield Village has hosted both international tournaments, the Ryder Cup (1987) and Presidents Cup (2013). The course is tee to green Bentgrass, with a nasty Kentucky Bluegrass / rye/ fescue mix rough. The course will be set up at 7,571 yards and par 72. The par 5 15th hole is part of the Aon Risk Reward Challenge, currently led by Adam Scott. The weather this weekend will be dry with no rain in the forecast, but the temperatures will be in low 90s which may play a factor.
