On May 20, it was announced that Arne Slot would be taking over as Liverpool FC’s new manager, taking the reins from the retiring legend, Jürgen Klopp—the man almost single-handedly responsible for bringing the Reds back to the top.

Klopp finishes his career as Liverpool’s coach with a 299-109-83 record. He also took home the Premier League title in 2020, the Carabao Cup in 2022 and 2024, the FA Cup in 2022, and the Champions League title in 2019.

Klopp leaves massive shoes to fill at Liverpool, so the process of finding a new manager was a daunting one. So why Arne Slot, a man who has never coached outside of the Netherlands?

Slot was born in a small town called Bergentheim in the Netherlands in 1978. He started his soccer career playing for VV Bergentheim, a small club in his hometown. He would also play for FC Zwolle, NAC Breda, Sparta Rotterdam, and PEC Zwolle.

Over an 18-year playing career, spanning from 1995 to 2013, Slot made 462 appearances, scoring 100 goals.

In the past eight years, Slot has coached SC Cambuur from 2016 to 2017, Alkmaar Zaanstreek (AZ) from 2019 to 2020, and Feyenoord from 2021 to 2024, racking up 151 wins, 51 draws, and 40 losses.

He also helped lead Feyenoord to the UEFA Europa League Final, 1st place in the Dutch Eredivisie League, a KNVB Cup win, and he took home the Rinus Michels Award for Eredivisie Manager of the Year.

They also both make use of a double pivot, a move in which two midfielders play in front of the central defense and behind the attacking midfielders. These commonalities will make the transition from Klopp to Slot much easier for the team.

In an article published by The New York Times, Slot revealed he has been in contact with Klopp about the position. “He gave me more than a few good tips, but I think what stood out for me was that he was so happy for me, and that—and I think he said this in the media as well—he would be my biggest fan from now on because he supports Liverpool in the best possible way, and you don’t see this very often,” Slot said.

Slot will have to wear a very heavy crown left by Klopp, but his success on the field over the past few seasons proves that he is the perfect man for the job, giving Liverpudlians hope that the accomplishments brought to the club by Klopp will surely continue.
