Horns Down
Alright, I’ve had enough. I saw something tonight that just put me over the edge when it comes to the whole “horns down” phenomenon. As you can see in the photo above, this game is my first recollection of seeing the Texas Longhorns’ symbol turned upside down in a disrespectful way. I enjoy it. I love it. The utter disrespect towards the University of Texas by throwing the “horns down”. I loved seeing it when Miami played Florida State and FSU would put “the U” symbol facing down, when Miami would do the tomahawk chop then the throat slash or when the “gator chomp” is done with the throat slash following. It’s fun! It’s disrespect towards the opponent during the most heated rivalries. It’s great. I love trash talk, the passion between teams / fanbases but now it’s just gotten out of control. It’s lost it’s luster. It’s no longer disrespectful but embarrassing to see. When fans from a school not even playing UT flash it randomly at games and girls are taking graduation photos flashing horns down - what are we doing here? It’s just whatever, silly and embarrassing to see now.
My first recollection of seeing the “horns down” being done was in 2000 during the Red River Showdown between OU and Texas. In this particular game this is when sophomore Quentin Griffin from Houston, TX, rushed the ball 23 times for 87 yards and 6 TDs against the University of Texas. I remember UT getting absolutely blasted and there was nothing else they could do but warm up the buses and get the hell out of Dallas as fast as OU put up 40 points that day. The OU faithful were going crazy and every other camera shot towards them would show the crowd throwing the horns down. I thought to myself, “damn, that’s some disrespectful shit” as UT continued to get pummeled. It was deserved. OU was the best team by far on the field and nobody was in the same stratosphere as Quentin Griffin that day.
Fast forward to Quentin Griffin’s senior season during the Red River Showdown. Yes, more of the same domination. Griffin touched the ball 32 times on the ground and ran for 248 yards with 2 TDs (he recovered a fumble for 1 TD). Again, the fans were throwing up the horns down and it was deserved. During both of these games, I could be wrong, but I did not see Quentin Griffin throw up the Horns Down once. I’ve also scoured the internet looking for an image because I thought I remembered him doing it. I just finished the highlights of both games and he scored with dignity, which made it feel even worse just dominating with class. Now, I ask, if Quentin Griffin isn’t throwing up the Horns Down, why are you? Seriously, why?
It’s been annoying for awhile but I got sent over the top tonight. The LSU Tigers baseball team who is #1 in the country per the DDSN 24 Pack Rankings defeated the Texas Longhorns baseball team, which got its record knocked down to (3-5). I saw an LSU account tweet, “Horns fucking down”! LSU is filled with a ton of MLB prospects and Texas is nowhere near the 24 Pack Rankings. LSU should wipe its hands after taking care of this scrub UT squad and move on like they were just another team. Instead they lowered themselves. I don’t get it. LSU is far superior than UT this season, they should treat them as if they are a JV team instead of its Daddy. You celebrate beating your dad, not beating up your little brother. Granted, this tweet was not from an LSU affiliated account but I did see an LSU team picture after the game with a couple players flashing the horns down. I do commend the player throwing up an “L” assuming its for LSU or for Loser.
My point here is, do you ever see UT players do a “thumbs down” to disrespect A&M? No. Do you ever see UT flash guns down for Oklahoma State or Texas Tech? No. When you are the top dog there is nobody above you to disrespect because you are already at the top, historically speaking. This is what I would expect from LSU baseball.
I myself went to UTSA and never once have I given the thought of throwing a UTEP Miners “picks down” or anything that has to do with UAB or North Texas. That is just me personally. I didn’t go to UT, OU or Texas A&M but those are my thoughts.
If you are the best, then you act like the best. I wonder how many times Nick Saban, Peyton Manning, Kobe Bryant or Michael Jordan has flashed any sign disrespecting another school or team. Tom Brady - the most decorated NFL QB of all time has 1 .. just 1 gesture he flashes … he points to every single finger that holds up his Super Bowl rings.
The great ones let the play on the field speak for itself.
