Cowboys Blank the Giants

TAMPA, Fla. – The New York Giants fell 40-0 to the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1.

The Giants, unable to score this past week, had the fourth-worst result in their history. The worst was a loss to another rival, the Philadelphia Eagles, in 1948: 45-0. It looks as though the Giants are only moving backward.

The Giants started well, marching to the Cowboys’ 8-yard line. Just when they seemed about to score, a flag was called on Giants tight end Andrew Thomas for a false start.

The Giants moved back 5 yards, and it was third-and-7. Quarterback Daniel Jones snapped the ball in the shotgun, and center John Michael Schmitz Jr. had a bad snap. The ball never reached Jones and rolled to the 28-yard line, where Jones fell on it.

The bad luck didn’t end there. The Giants tried to kick a field goal, but it was blocked. Cowboys cornerback Noah Igbinoghene picked up the ball, ran down the sideline and gave the Cowboys the first touchdown of the game and the year.

6-0

After a Cowboys field goal, the Giants tried to score. But luck still wasn’t on their side. Daniel Jones’ pass to Saquon Barkley was intercepted and returned by DaRon Bland after Barkley fumbled.

16-0

In the second quarter, the Cowboys kicked a 38-yard field goal, making the score 19-0. The Giants came back for the next drive, and Jones’ pass to Darren Waller was intercepted.

The Cowboys marched down the field, reaching the 2-yard line. Tony Pollard ran into the end zone, scoring another touchdown for the Cowboys.

26-0

Dallas didn’t ease up, as they came back from halftime with Pollard punching his way through the line for his second touchdown of the night.

33-0

Going into the fourth quarter, the Giants had to find some scoring opportunity, but they couldn’t find the end zone. Unlike the Dallas Cowboys, who scored one more time to give the Giants their most embarrassing defeat in 75 years.

KaVontae Turpin ran 7 yards past the line of scrimmage, bringing the Cowboys’ score to 40.

The Cowboys looked phenomenal, never easing up, finding open receivers and dismantling the Giants’ defense. They also sacked their offensive line on multiple occasions.

The Giants need to regroup and find a way to come back from that devastating loss. Moving forward, they must build a stronger offensive line, as this play doesn’t help Daniel Jones’ ability to move the ball. Jones must also avoid being sacked, as he was sacked seven times during this game.

Another issue is Saquon Barkley, who tried to hold the Giants hostage before the start of the season. He demanded a better contract from the franchise, saying, “My leverage is I could say, ‘F*** you’ to the Giants, I could say ‘F*** you’ to my teammates. And be like, ‘You want me to show you how valuable I am to the team? I won’t play a down.’ And that’s a play I could use.”

Barkley’s first solid year was last season in 2022. He sat out the previous years with multiple injuries. Since 2018, he has had a torn ACL and several high ankle sprains, sidelining him until last year. In the 16 games he played, he had 10 touchdowns, 1,312 yards on 295 carries, averaging 4.45 yards per carry.

After speaking of a holdout and fumbling in the first game of the season, it will be hard for the Penn State alum to convince the franchise to bring him back.
