It has been the year of the triple-digit underdog to kick off the PGA season, we got our third straight triple-digit winner, an amateur from the University of Alabama, Nick Dunlap. We highlighted Dunlap in a preview last week and had a 9/1 bet on him to finish top 20. Not only did we cash, but he saved us from a losing round. We only played the first round because the three different courses at La Quinta made it tough to get a read on good wagers.
This week we’ll be at Torrey Pines, playing both the North and South courses. There is a $9 million total purse with $1.62 million going to the winner. Max Homa won the 2023 Farmers Insurance Open, making his fourth-win in his home state of California. Remember, this tournament is being played Wednesday-Saturday.
The Field:
Torrey Pines High School graduate, Michael Kim, who finished sixth at the American Express last weekend, will be in the field this week; Keith Mitchell, who is the only player that finished in the top five at both the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Genesis Invitational, also finished ninth last weekend at the American Express. A San Diego native, Xander Schauffele, who had a very strong finish in third place last weekend, is also in the field. A few other notables will be here this weekend, such as Patrick Cantlay, Collin Morikawa, Sungjae Im, Keegan Bradley, and Tony Finau. The young guns in the field are Ludvig Aberg, Eric Cole, Sahith Theegala, and Matthieu Pavon.
The Course:
The field will be playing both the North and South Courses this weekend, which are the only two courses on tour that are longer than 7,500 yards or have fewer than 5,000 square feet of greens. The fairways here are narrow, with the brutal roughs.
