  • 11:15am cst: USC Trojans vs. Michigan State Spartans (-1.5)

This is an interesting matchup of similar styles. Both are mostly half court teams with veteran guards. Michigan State is a top 5 3PT shooting team in the country and USC is no where close to that. USC hangs its hat on the way it plays defense but they will need a bit more when facing the Spartans. MSU usually struggles with teams with size and USC doesn’t have much of that. I like the Spartans ability to shoot the three and their veteran guards.

  • 11:40am cst: Kennesaw State Owls vs. Xavier Musketeers (-12.5)

I think this will be a high tempo, fast paced game. Neither one of these teams play much of any defense. Xavier is one of the top 3PT shooting teams in the country. I like Xavier to put up some points here and run away with this one. I don’t think the Owls have the horses on offense to keep up. Plain and simple.

  • 12:30pm cst: UC Santa Barbara Gauchos vs. Baylor Bears (-10.5)

Baylor has such a good offense that plays at a very high level with pro talent. Except, they don’t play any defense. The Gauchos haven’t really been tested all season without any comparable competition to the Bears. I could blindly play UCSB and hope that Baylor doesn’t make 12 3PT but what is more likely to happen? Baylor’s offense to explode against a team that isn’t in the Big 12. That is what I expect to happen here. I’m siding with the better offense and talent.

  • 1:00pm cst: VCU Rams (+4.5) vs. St. Mary’s Gaels

I don’t really understand this line. The Gaels are favored why? Because they beat a shitty Gonzaga team at home? No thank you. VCU is athletic and they play tough defense. The Rams can get the ball inside and they do not rely on the 3PT shot. If they are making threes then it will be hard to defeat them. VCU is the better team that played in a better conference and plays tough defense. This one is easy for me.

  • 1:45pm cst: Vermont Catamounts vs. Marquette Golden Eagles (-10.5)

Marquette just won the Big East regular season and tournament title and are now only laying 10.5 against Vermont. There are a lot of large numbers on these early games but it’s because it is for some of the best offenses in the country. I don’t mind laying this type of wood with teams that can back it up on both sides of the ball.

  • 2:10pm cst: Pittsburgh Panthers (+4.5) vs. Iowa State Cyclones

We have a good matchup here. The Pitt Panther offense vs. the Iowa State defense. Iowa State can shoot the 3PT but maybe not as good as Pitt. Iowa State will have the size advantage but if the 7’ Spaniard twins for Pitt can do just enough in the paint I like them here. Iowa State had Baylor’s number but I’ve liked Pitt all season and ISU struggles late in games especially at the FT line. That is my deciding factor.

  • 3:00pm cst: North Carolina State Wolf Pack vs. Creighton Blue Jays (-5)

We have been fading teams that do not belong in the NCAA Tournament and it’s been working. Creighton is hot and I don’t see that changing against a bottom tier ACC school. NCST has some solid guards but I don’t think they will be ready to run with the Blue Jays. Creighton has multiple NBA players on its team. This is just a terrible matchup for NCST in a game they don’t belong in. I’m happy to lay the points here. This number shouldn’t be lower than 6.

  • 3:30pm cst: Iona Gaels vs. UCONN Huskies (-9)

This is an easy one. UCONN is playing like one of the best teams in the country. Definitely in the top 10 right now because they are hitting their shots from deep and their big men have finally figured it out. UCONN will have a huge size advantage and I look for them to exploit it. Iona can run but they don’t have the defense and rebounding ability like UCONN. I also believe the rumors are true about Rick Pitino going to St. John’s. This number is too short.

  • 5:50pm cst: Farleigh Dickinson Knights (+23) vs. Purdue Boilermakers

The Boilermakers are one of the worst against the spread but that isn’t why I’m fading them here. They don’t close out games like they should and if there is a team that can pressure them defensively they eventually crack. FDU can shoot the ball, they have strong guards and they will throw multiple defenses at Purdue. Don’t underestimate a hungry team, with hope and nothing to lose. FDU’s HC won and the High School level and he’s looking to mount another head above his mantle. A 7’5” Canadian one. Don’t be surprised when FDU wins.

  • 6:10pm cst: Providence Friars (+4) vs. Kentucky Wildcats

Here is an interesting game. Veteran players vs. young guns. Ed Cooley vs. John Calipari. Kentucky has all the talent in the world but their guards meltdown when the game is on the line. It’s like they just shut down and forget how to dribble, pass and run the offense to close out a game. Providence has the side that can matchup pound for pound with Oscar Tshiebwe. In a sudden death game I rather have the pesky Providence guards. If it’s the NBA draft then give me Kentucky but that’s not what we have here. Neither of these two teams are coming into this game in good form. Give me the points.

  • 6:25pm cst: Drake Bulldogs vs. Miami Hurricanes (-2)

Everyone looks for the underdog and I don’t see Drake keeping up with Miami’s offense. Drake plays defense and it may help them but the Drake offense can’t match points. This spread is way too short. This line is disrespectful to Jim Larranaga and the Miami offense.

  • 6:35pm cst: Grand Canyon Antelopes (+16) vs. Gonzaga Bulldogs

To me Gonzaga isn’t what they used to be. Of course they look incredible against weak WCC competition but when they will have to step up in this tournament they will falter. GCU isn’t in position for an upset I don’t think. Gonzaga could run away with this game but I feel it’s a few points too many to lay against a team that can shoot the 3PT against Gonzaga’s poor defense. This is a fade of the Zag’s defense.

  • 8:20pm cst: Florida Atlantic Owls (+2) vs. Memphis Tigers

FAU is coming into this game as an undercover Cinderella. The rank higher than Memphis in offensive efficiency, 3PT and defense. Memphis has a great proven point guard in Kendrick Davis but FAU may have the advantage of being overlooked. I like the metrics and FAU here.

  • 8:40pm cst: Montana State Bobcats vs. Kansas State Wildcats (-8)

Kansas State comes into this tournament with as good of a chance at cutting down the nets as anyone. Kansas State can score from many different ways and I’m not sure Montana State will be able to keep up. Kansas State brings with them a top defense in the country that’s been battle tested in the Big 12. I like K-State to lock up these Bobcats and take care of business.

  • 8:55pm cst: Kent State Golden Flashes vs. Indiana Hoosiers (-4.5)

I don’t like Kent State here and I don’t think they have a shot for one reason: size. They will not be able to rebound and defend the post against Indiana. The Golden Flashes have trouble defending the paint and I think that weakness gets exploited. Indiana has the better coach and talent. This number is light.

  • 9:05pm cst: Arizona State Sun Devils vs. TCU Horned Frogs (-5.5)

Well, ASU played a perfect game on Thursday against Nevada. I typically always fade a team off a game like that especially ASU. The Sun Devils game is to force turnovers and speed teams up to their own pace. The problem is, TCU loves to play that game. TCU has the best stamina in the country. They don’t get tired. Ever. Arizona State flexed its muscles on some low level guards for Nevada. They will be going up against the varsity tonight and I expect different results.
