College Hoops Conference Tournaments Thursday

Let me start off by saying these numbers are jumping all over the place. I have plenty of information and knowledge to share on these games but by the time most see the breakdown these numbers are changing because games are in all day. I’ll play and note what I like the most and play but these games are so volatile and the numbers are saying that. They games we have been losing have been by the thinnest of margins deciding in the last minute of the games. Going into today our record on the season is: (128-130-3) with our goal to finish above 52%. Let’s get after it!

  • Iowa State Cyclones vs. Baylor Bears (-4.5); 11:30am

These two played each other the last game of the season and Iowa State kicked Baylor’s teeth in. Baylor made more 3PT but only shot 30% from the field. This is the Big 12 and teams don’t just get the shit beat out of them twice in a row. Baylor has a chance to go on a run and get a better seed. It could make the difference in having a legitimate shot at the National Championship.

  • George Mason Patriots (+4.5) vs. Saint Louis Billikens; 1:00pm

HC Kim English has these Patriots playing great defense. They looked to be dead in the water against Richmond but they kept fighting back until the Spiders were the ones to crack first. They have great guards who don’t turn the ball over and they MAKE THEIR FREE THROWS. Down the stretch against Richmond they showed massive onions and didn’t flinch. Too many points here against with a team with plenty of confidence.

  • Ohio State Buckeyes (+2.5) vs. Iowa Hawkeyes; 1:30pm

This may be as gross as gross can get but hear me out. These two played each other twice. In the first game at home Ohio State, Sensabaugh had an amazing game and OSU won. In game two Iowa won and the game was dead even other than Ohio State’s turnovers. The Buckeyes have finally found something and I believe they will catch Iowa here. I do not like how Iowa has been playing since McCaffery came back to the team. Iowa lives by the 3PT die by the 3PT.. hard to trust. OSU has NBA talent.

  • West Virginia Mountaineers vs. Kansas Jayhawks (-3.5); 2:00pm

Similar handicap like in the Baylor game. Kansas’ last time out they got embarrassed by Texas in Austin. WVU just blew out Texas Tech and most likely solidified its tournament ticket. If KU rebounds there won’t be any issues here.

  • San Jose State Spartan vs. Nevada Wolf Pack (-5); 4:30pm

Nevada is on the bubble. I feel they are in and better than a handful on Big 10 teams but its not my decision. This is a flex game for the Wolf pack. They have SJSUs number and this line is short. I like Nevada here in what should be runaway game.

  • Oklahoma State Cowboys vs. Texas Longhorns (-6); 6:00pm

Will Avery Anderson III play? Did OSU punch their ticket after defeating OU? Texas needs to win to secure a #2 seed or Baylor or another school can easily steal it. I like Texas at this number or lower. OSU won they game they needed and the gas could be let off here but the same could be said about UT after its win against Kanas. Again, this number should be 8 without Avery Anderson.

Other Highlighted Games:

  • Rutgers Scarlet Knights vs. Michigan Wolverines (-3); 11:00am

Rutgers is reeling and I personally have them OUT of the tournament field. Wisconsin is kicked out after losing to Ohio State so Rutgers now has a better chance. If Michigan wins they are in and kick Rutgers to the curb. Michigan has Rutgers’ number and I like that to continue. Rutgers has not been themselves since Mag went down with an injury.

  • Davidson Wildcats vs. VCU Rams (-6.5)

Who ever makes their 3PTs will win this game and cover. The first time these two teams met VCU made 15 3s to Davidson’s 2. In the second meeting Davidson made 7 3PT to VCUs 0 but the Wildcats still lost.

  • St. John’s Red Storm vs. Marquette Golden Eagles (-6.5); 11:00am

The Johnnies were able to run over the Butler Bulldogs but now they will go head to head with the Big East regular season champions. Both of the games these two played were about dead even with the exception being the amount of times the Johnnies fouled and FTs Marquette took. This one is going to be too close to tell.

  • Wake Forest Demon Deacons vs. Miami Hurricanes (-6.5); 11:00am

I feel this number is closer to 5 but I don’t think I want to take the points here. Wake is very capable of keeping up with the Hurricanes and where the number is at now I don’t feel comfortable playing Miami. Hungry / desperate teams in these situations are difficult to handicap. Wake Forest won on a buzzer beater 3 and sent Jim Boeheim into retirement after Boeheim slandered Wake Forest for saying they “bought their team”. Hope in these situations goes a long way.

  • Providence Friars vs. UCONN Huskies (-7); 1:30pm

I can’t get in front of these UCONN Huskies until the time is right. They have been living right by shooting the 3PT and their big men are finally playing like tough big men. Providence got ran over by Seton Hall last time out and I would expect them to be sharp. No need to play this one unless you really want action. Both teams are solid in the tournament so only seeding is at play.

  • Pittsburgh Panthers vs. Duke Blue Devils (-6.5); 1:30pm

Pitt played Duke tough but they were injured and the last game Duke didn’t have Roach. Duke has an enormous rebounding advantage and it showed last game against Pitt. The Blue Devils outrebounded Pitt 51 to 28! If the 3PT isn’t falling for Pitt it could be a long day. After Duke beat UNC on the road it was a major sign that when healthy this team is a real player for the National Championship. They play defense, can handle the ball, shoot the three and have NBA talent. The perfect recipe to win it all. If this number gets to -6 which I do not think it will it’s a play on Duke. I wouldn’t play Pitt for the reasons above so laying up to 7 with the Blue Devils isn’t a bad idea either.

  • Colorado State Rams vs. San Diego State Aztecs (-8.5); 2:00pm

The Aztecs provide a terrible matchup for the Rams. SDST can easily dominate this game if they press. Some times they do but normally wait until the 2nd half to inflict their will. SDST is also rested, which means even more trouble for the Rams.

  • Penn State Nittany Lions vs. Illinois Fighting Illini (-2.5); 5:30pm

Penn State is on the bubble and have Illinois’ number. Illinois has all the talent in the country but rarely show it. Penn State is unreliable on the road. Which of these teams will show up? Take the hungry dog or pass.

  • North Carolina Tar Heels vs. Virginia Cavaliers (-1); 6:00pm

UNC is still on bubble watch and this just may get them in if they win. UNC could beat the majority of the field and if it comes down to politics they will get in. Virginia has been struggling and its no secret they can’t score. I like the Tar Heels here but its a coin toss number.

  • Arkansas Razorbacks (-1.5) vs. Auburn Tigers; 6:00pm

Same story as with Illinois. Arkansas has a team full of NBA players and all the talent to be #1 in the country but they don’t play defense. Arkansas also struggles against competent guard play, which Auburn has for the most part. On paper Arkansas should win this game but Auburn plays with grit and toughness something Arkansas is missing. The reason why they aren’t going to win the National Championship even though they could.

  • TCU Horned Frogs (-2) vs. Kansas State Wildcats; 8:30pm

TCU is getting juiced here but I’m not sure why. Kansas State is basically playing in a home game. These teams are even. TCU has strong guards but K-State has a strong defense. Again, coin flip game and the dog looks like the better side. No need to play this one but it’ll be a hell of a game to watch because these two can win the National Championship if healthy.

  • New Mexico Lobos vs. Utah State Aggies (-3); 10:30pm

The get out game of the day. I think Utah State is in the tournament but if New Mexico wins and goes on a run they could easily steal the bid. Utah State has the juice to win this game and advance but again, you never know what a desperate team is capable of. This game will come down to whether or not the Aggies make their 3PT. If they do they win if they don’t New Mexico will win.
