College Hoops Super Tuesday

KJ Williams and the #23 LSU Tigers play host to the Florida Gators tonight.

College football season is officially over and most of us will move on to watching college basketball. There are plenty of good games in the Big 12, SEC and Big East tonight. Let’s get started!

Butler Bulldogs vs. St. John’s Red Storm (-3.5); total 148.5 - 5:30pm ct

The Red Storm like to play fast, press full-court and stay in your face all game. HC Mike Anderson is a disciple of National Championship HC Nolan Richardson who is a disciple of none other than the “Bear”, National Champion, Don Haskins. Mike Anderson learned from these men to play physical defense and pressure offenses for 40 minutes without letting up. Nolan Richardson coined this as “40 Minutes of Hell” and Mike Anderson has been tormenting offenses ever since. The season so far for St. John’s has felt as if they are stuck in Hell with its current 5 game losing streak. The Red Storm’s speed should give Butler some fits and this has been a good matchup for St. John’s over the years. I would lay the number here with Center, Joel Soriano and the Johnnies in a get right spot at home.

Florida Gators vs. LSU Tigers (+1.5); total 136 - 6:00pm ct

The LSU Tigers started the season hot jumping out to a 12-1 record with it’s lone loss being against the Kansas State Wildcats who are now #7 in the country. That winning streak included a home win against, then a top 10 Arkansas Razorbacks squad. Florida probably has the better defense with Colin Castleton anchoring the team. LSU now has lost 2 in a row on the road to Kentucky and Texas A&M looking to get back to its winning ways. I like the Tigers getting points trying to keep the winning streak alive in Baton Rouge behind KJ Williams.

Texas Tech Red Raiders (+5.5) vs. Iowa State Cyclones; total 128.5 - 7:00pm ct

The Red Raiders travel to Ames, Iowa to take on the Cyclones tonight with both teams currently on opposite ends of the standings. Texas Tech has yet to get a win in conference play (0-3) after having some close losses. Iowa State on the other hand is coming off a great road win against TCU. I like a desperate Texas Tech squad getting more than 4 points. Iowa State may be looking pass the 0-3 Red Raiders with a date against Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse on deck 1/14. Tech has UT next but without a win in conference play Texas Tech needs this game like blood to survive the Big 12 gauntlet and the Cyclones are laying one too many here.

Oklahoma Sooners (+10.5) vs. Kansas Jayhawks; total 132.5 - 8:00pm ct

Kind of the same thinking as above. The Sooners have played the Jayhawks tough the last five games going 4-1 Against The Spread. A lot of this has to do with the Groves brothers that gave the Jayhawks a scare in the NCAA Tournament a couple years ago when they played at Eastern Washington. Porter Moser has these Sooners heading in the right direction in only his 2nd season. The Kansas Jayhawks are #2 in the country and rightfully so but anytime you can get double digits in the Big 12 - I’ll take them especially in this case. Boomer.

Nevada Wolf Pack (+9.5) vs. San Diego State Aztecs; total 139 - 10:00pm ct

In our late night tip the Wolf Pack from Reno head to San Diego to take on the #15 Aztecs. The Aztecs love to play tough and physical defense forcing its opponents to make mental mistakes. Nevada has had success in keeping the game close vs. SDST but not necessarily winning. SDST is 9-1 vs. Nevada in their last 10 meetings but the Wolf Pack are 7-3 ATS covering the number and staying close. Both team put their winning streaks on the line tonight. Look for these dogs from Reno to hunt tonight and keep it close in this Mountain West showdown.

A few other games on the docket to look out for:

Oklahoma State Cowboys vs. #7 Kansas State Wildcats

The Wildcats put their #7 ranking on the line tonight at home in the Octagon of Doom. Markquis Nowell is averaging 34 PPG & 11.5 AST his last two games and is must watch TV.

Michigan State vs. Wisconsin

The Badgers dropped out of the 24 Pack rankings after dropping a game on the road to Illinois. Michigan State has been slow but steady crawling up the Big 10 standings.

North Carolina vs. Virginia

Both the Tar Heels and Cavaliers are 3-2 in ACC play. Not great starts but the winner here will be in good shape going forward. The loser will have a lot of work to do and an uphill climb.
