Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge, Orlando, Florida
Welcome to Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill, where the fairways of rye meet fame and the bermudagrass greens whisper secrets of champions. Arnold Palmer’s name reverberates through golf’s hallowed halls. His charisma, his swashbuckling style—Bay Hill was his canvas, and every swing, his masterpiece.
This weekend’s Arnold Palmer Invitational is the fourth of eight Signature Events on the 2024 PGA Tour schedule. It will be a 36-hole cut that will include the low 50 players (with ties) and any additional players within 10 strokes of the 36-hole lead. This week’s purse will be $20 million, with $4 million going to the winner along with 700 FedExCup points.
In our last two tournaments, we have battled back from being down 20 units, but now we are only down 1.69. Golf is a long game in the betting market and on the course. Patience always pays off in the long run. Now, if we can only find an outright winner this year, which is easier said than done, given the way this season has gone with four first-time PGA Tour winners and a list of triple-digit long shots. Honestly, it’s one of the reasons why we love to bet on golf, so let’s go for it again!
The Field:
A Signature Event means we will have the best of the best this weekend. The 48 of the top 50 in last year’s FedEx Playoffs will be in the field. The Aon Next 10 and Aon Swing 5 will also be in the field, led by last week’s first-time winner, Austin Eckroat. Last year’s winner, Scottie Scheffler, is back but with plenty of questions surrounding his putting game. He will be using a Taylor Made Spider Tour, trying to find some improvements. Rory McIlroy is looking for his first win on the PGA Tour this season on a course he is close to mastering. McIlroy has finished in the top 10 six times, finishing no worse than T13 only once. Out of the four rookies in the field, Sami Valimaki is the only one yet to win this season. Is he due for an upset win at Bay Hill? Last year’s debutant, Kurt Kitayama, became the first player since Robert Gamez in 1990 to win in his Arnold Palmer Invitational debut.
The Course:
Bay Hill, nestled in Orlando, Florida, first opened its fairways in 1961, courtesy of the talented architect Dick Wilson. The King himself, Arnold Palmer, took the reins in 1970 and eventually acquired the property in 1975. Over the years, he meticulously fine-tuned the course, leaving his indelible mark. Brace yourself for a 7,466-yard journey, with a par of 72. Bay Hill doesn’t play games; it’s one of the toughest tests on the PGA Tour each year. Almost every hole dances with water. The PGA Tour’s best must navigate these challenges with precision and nerve. Bay Hill demands nothing less than stellar ball-striking. The greens are guarded, the fairways strategic, and the bunkers cunning.
