The American Express First Round

Last week in Honolulu we had a three way playoff that was one by 500/1 longshot Grayson Murray. During the LIV Golf drama Rory McIlroy told Murray to, “just play better” and he did exactly that winning for the first time since 2017. Now, the Hawaii run is over and we are back on the west coast for the fall / winter swing. There will be 8.4 million reasons to have a great weekend in La Quinta with the winner taking home $1,512,000. Chris Kirk and Grayson Murray have taken down the first two tournaments so will we be in for another surprise this weekend?

The Field:

The World No.1 Scottie Scheffler will be in the field this weekend where he finished T11 last season. He will be joined by 20 of the top 50 players in the Official World Golf Rankings, which is the most at the American Express since 2005. Patrick Cantlay is also in the field and he seems to love this course. He has three top-10 finishes in five starts at the event, carded a final-round 61 to finish solo-second in 2021, which remains the Pete Dye Stadium Course record. Daniel Berger will be making his first appearance since the 2022 US Open. We will also get a good look at the rookie class as 26 of the 28 rookies will be in the field. Last but not least, the U.S. Amateur Champ, from the University of Alabama, sophomore Nick Dunlap will be in the field with a sponsor exemption.

The Course:

The American Express in La Quinta is a unique event because it will happen on three separate courses on three separate properties. The courses are La Quinta Country Club, PGA West (Nicklaus Tournament Course), and the Pete Dye Stadium Course. Weather was warm in November and December leading to great growing conditions and a thicker rough than normal. This will also be the first tournament of the year on Poa greens.
