SMU & Memphis Have Reloaded

College Football Preview Magazine:

Look for Memphis and SMU to have more wins this season than they had in the last couple of years. Both will have two of the more manageable schedules in the American Athletic Conference this season. Remember the American Athletic Conference will not look quite the same this year with Cincinnati, UCF and Houston going to the Big 12. This means that the teams that were the best of the rest teams from the AAC in these past few seasons potentially could break through this season.

Teams just like SMU and Memphis could benefit from this in terms of strength of schedule, especially bringing in a few teams from Conference USA, which has not performed well in recent years. In terms of strength of schedule, using the win-loss method, SMU has the 116th-rated schedule as its opponents combined for a 46% win percentage in 2022. Memphis has the 129th-rated schedule as its opponents in 2022 combined with a 43% winning percentage. Watch for Memphis and SMU to increase their regular-season win totals this season and potentially put themselves in the position to be two of the bigger breakthrough Group of Five teams for 2023.
