What We Learned: New Mexico vs. Texas A&M

FINAL: New Mexico 10 - Texas A&M 52

What We Learned:

Senior defensive back Josh DeBerry is visibly fast to the ball and loves to hit on defense. The Aggies obviously have the talent advantage, and it shows on the defensive side of the ball with their speed. On the first drive, Conner Weigman showed off his legs, his ability to move out of the pocket, and his arm. Whether he was playing New Mexico or LSU, Weigman can throw the football and looks like a top quarterback floating a perfect pass into the corner of the end zone for a touchdown.

On New Mexico’s third drive of the game, they marched right down the field on the Aggies. The Lobos used play action with the running game mixed in.

This QB is the real deal. Weigman marched the Aggies right down the field on their next possession. His accuracy and touch with the football are very noticeable. Yes, it was against New Mexico, but there are plenty of quarterbacks (Tyler Van Dyke) who faced lower competition and could not make these throws.

I saw all I needed to in the first half. The Aggies finished the game with some interesting numbers though: 3/7 (43%) on third down, nine penalties for 88 yards, and New Mexico finished with 34 minutes of possession to A&M’s 26 minutes.

As good as A&M looked, they still had some glaring issues like the ones noted above. This was a blowout so these could be inflated but still should be remembered. Connor Weigman was one of the best quarterbacks I watched this weekend. He also had some great help from his WRs like Evan Stewart and Noah Thomas. This Aggie team may have some potential, but we will have to wait for them to face some real competition first.

DDSN Player of the Game:

Texas A&M Sophomore QB, Conner Weigman: 18/23 for 236 yards and 5 touchdowns
